On The Patio
Rien Post's comments on my Colorado school shooting entry today and what he said about the United States in its untidy role as the Cultural Cahuna, the 800 pound gorilla you've got to pay attention to, well mannered or not, are pretty accurate. And I'm not sure what to say except that's pretty much what we'd say about ourselves.

We live in OZ, the OZ of glitz and lights and hucksterism, the quick fix, One of the Sisters. get rich, found a religion, burn a man at the cross midnight beating of the drum make a movie before you're 16 write a book before you're 12 be a star in a land that lies between the seas of light and shadow. What can I say? It's a gas. The beaches and the backyard barbecue spitting out links, lox, burgers, tacos, tofu, hot dogs, chicken fried rice and spermacidal jelly (don't hold the mayo), while the chilluns dance under the midday sun doing the fandango.

We've got god in forty seven flavors available on television, radio, church and liquor store drive through. We've got diets, sex, sox, rap, beer, cigarettes and psychiatry at your every fingertip and if you want more, self help for sinners, freedom for feminists and enlightenment for men marching on Washington, we've got CNN and Oprah. This we have and more and more, I guess, I shouldn't have to tell you:

The world you see around you was long ago assimilated into the US-Hollywood-Borg collective. The music you hear, the videos you see, the clothes you wear, the television you watch, the cleavage you admire, yea, even the very webmistress we are all bound to follow are made in America, Internet available in forty two colors and sizes from titmouse to Barnum and Bailey elephant, biography available in 47 languages from Amazon.com dropped shipped overnight from Rotterdam, no additional postage because you're such a good customer.

And occasionally, on a Tuesday afternoon, we shoot kids by the dozen and watch it real time out on the patio.

The banner photograph was taken on Telegraph Avenue late last year in Berkeley. The photograph of the "Sister" was taken on Easter in the Castro district of San Francisco.
